On arrival at the airport in the capital Maputo, the contrast between international style high-rise buildings of 1960’s architecture and the derelict downtown buildings, together with reed and mud residential areas on the city’s outskirts, immediately becomes evident.
After the collapse of the country’s economy after a protracted civil war that finally led to independence from colonial master Portugal, Mozambique has slowly rebuilt itself. The past five years has seen a rapid turn around, with infrastructure being recreated and maintained, and a bustling informal economy has bloomed where the friendly locals are ready to earn a living with a smile.
