London Nighthike a HUGE success

London Nighthike 19th September 2008

Across the Divide has once again teamed up with Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres' and Open House for the fourth, and best yet, London Nighthike.

Clear starlit skies were the order on this unique walking event with over 1500 people taking on the 20-mile challenge. The walk took them through the streets of London with exclusive entry to some of London’s greatest landmarks Somerset House, Battersea Power Station, Horseguards and the new Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre in Fulham were just some of the highlights along the way.

Walkers also enjoyed live music, champagne and strawberries and performance acts along the route, with the finish line at the top of City Hall for a bacon buttie and the morning papers.

Capgemini Wild UK Challenge

Extreme weather does not halt another awesome challenge on Exmoor. 150 people rose above the elements over the weekend to complete the Capgemini Wild UK Challenge and in the process raised over £100,000 for the Prince's Trust. 30 teams took on the hiking, navigating, kayaking and mountain biking despite some of the worst weather of the year. Torrential rain through Friday and into Saturday turned the tracks to streams and the camps into mud baths, but thanks to amazing sprit from the competitors and endless hard work from the Across the Divide Team the event was a huge success and a great experience for all involved. The winning team was Avanade Athletic with a record score. They like all teams involved took on the event with great energy and big smiles and despite the wet weather the event ended in the sunshine after 3 days and 100 miles through this stunning part of the West Country.

Visit stunning Costa Rica

Our friends at Muscular Dystrophy Campaign are heading out to Costa Rica in January. Costa Rica is a tiny country but one of the most ecologically and climactically diverse in the world. It is home to 5 of all plant and animal species on the planet, with natural habitats spanning rainforests, volcanoes, mountains and coastal zones. Our challenge is a 90 km trek followed by an 8 km section of rafting to the finish line. The journey starts in the town of El Empalme on the Continental Divide and finishes in Oriente with excellent vehicle access throughout the trek. Almost the entire trek is above 1000 meters so the weather is cool and the scenery is spectacular, as we traverse 4x4 tracks through rainforest and cloud forest. The last 8 km of rafting is on a class III section and takes about 1½ hours. For more details Click here.

First descent of Kuiseb Canyon, Namibia by ATD Director

There are not many places left in the world that have not been fully explored but the Kuiseb Canyon located deep within Namibia Namib-Naukluft is one such place. Its remoteness, inhospitality and lack of water have stopped easy travel though its hidden folds and preserved a landscape little influenced by outside influences.

However, recently an expedition to traverse its most inaccessible sections was mounted by former Namib Park Ranger Kobus Alberts from Namibia and veteran explorer and director of Across the Divide, Mark Hannaford. Starting at the Kuiseb Bridge and finishing at the Topnar settlement at Homeb its aim was to be the longest ever journey through the canyon and to record via video and photography the interior this remote area. you can read the full account here at the ATD blog.
